In the late 1800’s destruction of the wetland habitat and old growth forests caused an alarming drop in the population of the breathtakingly beautiful Wood Duck. To counter this decline in nesting habitat artificial nesting boxes were developed and successfully used to boost the Wood Duck population back a safe level. These colorful birds have adapted to the artificial nesting boxes so well that today you will find many hunting and conservation organizations holding annual Wood Duck Box building days. The story of the Wood Duck is a great example of how wildlife management can help preserve the overall success of an individual species.
